Hurst Castle spit

Hurst Castle spit is often used as a case study of spit formation and also of salt marshes and their conservation.

Keyhaven Marshes, which has formed behind the spit, is under threat, as starving of the spit by beach protection measures further up the coastline means that the spit is breached more and more by storms. Beach replenishment is used to strengthen the spit but it is still under threat.

Beach protection works on the tip of the spit.
