Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge is a popular tourist attraction in the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England. It is the home of cheddar cheese, which was traditionally stored in the limestone caves to mature. It is also where Britain's oldest complete human skeleton was found. Cheddar Man is believed to be over 9000 years old and was discovered in 1903.

Cheddar Gorge began forming around one million years ago, when a river eroded the limestone to form the narrow, steep-sided gorge that we see today. It then made its way underground, forming the caves.

Interesting rock formations.

Stalactites and stalagmites in Gough's Cave. These are formed by the gradual build-up of sediment and minerals, left by water running down the feature (stalactites) or dripping onto the ground (stalagmites).
